Laura smiled and swung into the saddle, smiling broadly. She seemed bright and perky, despite the chilly weather. “Ready, Toffee?” The teen asked, patting the sleek chestnut gelding’s coat. He tossed head in agreement and she grinned. Squeezing firmly, she felt his short, choppy walk begin. She gave him lots of rein and encouraged him to stretch into the contact. He hesitantly stretched into the reins and slowly his strides began to lengthen and relax. “Good boy.” Laura praised, patting him. Taking up a gentle, fairly loose contact, she asked for a trot. He stepped out with big, strides, keeping his neck stretched out. He seemed much more relaxed than usual and he was moving more freely. Laura sat lightly in the saddle and slid her outside leg back, bumping the gelding lightly with it. Toffee moved into a relaxed carefree sort of canter, on the correct lead. Laura smiled and rocked easily to the movement, keeping a light contact. After a little canterwork, Laura smiled and dismounted. She led the colt to the barn, thinking that he was handling his training well.
A MONTH LATER…
Laura walked calmly out to Toffee’s paddock and whistled. The gelding thundered over, nuzzling her gently. “We’re really getting close, huh, baby.” She cooed, hugging the cute pony. She led him to the barn and hooked him in crossties. Laura curried his soft coat gently and then brushed him off with a dandy brush. She picked his hooves and laid the jumping saddle on his back. She tightened the girth and strapped on her helmet. Then, she slipped the bit into his mouth. She led him out to the jumping arena and mounted quickly. She gave the chestnut Australian Stock Pony a pat and began to work on some circles. After a thorough warm up, Laura urged Toffee into a swift canter and urged him towards a 1’ crossrail. He bounced confidently over it and upon landing, accelerated eagerly. “Easy, boy.” She said, collecting the reins a little firmer. He slowed down a bit and took the next jump, a 1’6” oxer, with style. Laura guided him over a coop and a liverpool. Now, it was time for a triple. She clucked softly and kneaded her hands up his neck as he leapt boldly over each fence in the combination. After 3 more jumps, they had finished the course and Laura smiled proudly. “Good boy, Toffee.” She praised, patting his sleek coat and riding back to the barn :-)
