You guys just don't know how much you are missing if you don't watch Animatrix and don't play Enter the Matrix. Some of the Animatrix and ALL of the game are an integral part of the whole story.

In the game, Persephone not only kisses Ghost (and there is a suggestion that he might have a thing for Trinity), but she also kisses Niobe. I think that kissing is for her what fighting is for Seraph. Kissing is Persephone's way of knowing someone better - their innermost secrets. In this scene (live action no less) she guesses that Niobe is in love, and when Niobe says her lover is Lock, Persephone says something like, 'no, that's not the one you love, but I'll bet Lock knows' probably implying that she still loves Morpheus.

I was betting on the Oracle as the Mother of the Matrix, but I am starting to seriously consider Persephone as a good candidate.
