To the Brothers the Matrix has always been a trilogy. They wrote it as a rtilogy, and wanted to mkae all three films at once. However, understandably the studio didn't trust the relatively new directors. If the films hadn't been a massive comercial succes (as it probably would have been, but hey, they didn't know that) then they would have lost money.

And it's very unlikely there'll be a matrix 4, and I hope not too. They are expanding the Matrix into new areas. There are loads of comics, theres the Animatrix, Enter the Matrix, Matrix Online due in 2005 i think it is. So a 4th movie is probably not going to happen.
