It doesn't answer your questions about why keep humans alive. I can't answer that. Pity? Kindness?
It does however show how things got started. It has the events running up to the war, the war itself, and a little after that. It's pretty cool. I've seen better Animatrix's though.
So, go check it out, you might like it.
