Brent,

Why don't you check the following sources for ideas:
Electronic Beowulf
http://www.uky.edu/~kiernan/eBeowulf/guide.htm
Web Resources about Beowulf
http://www.georgetown.edu/irvinemj/english016/beowulf/beowulf.html

YOu might look this article in our JSTOR collection
The Germanic Context of the Unferb Episode
Carol J. Clover
Speculum, Vol. 55, No. 3. (Jul., 1980), pp. 444-468.
Stable URL: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0038-7134%28198007%2955%3A3%3C444%3ATGCOTU%3E2.0.CO%3B2-V

WHich looks for the Norse backgrounds to the story through German examples.

I woudl think examining the historical backgrounds to the story would be excellent, esp. attempting to determine what is fact and what is fiction and what has a historical basis, i.e. what evidence do we have.

You might also check
The Anglo-Saxon Harp
Robert Boenig
Speculum, Vol. 71, No. 2. (Apr., 1996), pp. 290-320.
