Women's music is a difficult "genre" to define. You know it when you hear it, but it is hard to describe what it is. It seems that women musicians get placed in either the women's music category or the pop music category. They are either seen as lesbian, feminist, angry, man-haters or they are popular because they are wearing next to nothing. Why can't women be seen for what they are? If they are talented musicians, why is it that we have to have a special category for women that are doing the same thing as a male musician? I think Jones says it best when she talks about female musicians challenging the male-as-norm and the heterosexual-as-norm ideals of our society. As soon as women deviate from the "norm" they need to have their own space, like women's studies in universities, away from all the "normal" people.
