I agree. In the movie, the women who lived in the mountains did play a more submissive role; however, the research went up to the mountains and she ran her own show. It was not until the interaction between the researcher and her colleague/boss, did you see a dominate role. In the mountains, there was not much interaction with the outlanders so women have been playing the same role for generations. Men took advantage of their wives, and even their mistresses, and that is why that guy was shot. The researcher went up to the mountains knowing that she was educated and able to gather her data. The mountain people where nieve giving her their tradition to put in a book to sell. I also think that is why she fell in love with the only guy who traveled in the outside world and was awear of the possibilities. Women from outside new how to speak for themselves better and played more roles in the community rather then just in the home. The mountain women knew about land and their identity, which was more then enough for them.
