I agree with you that it is fascinating how the ingroup/outgroup politics work and how to create fragmentation within counterculture movements (such as music) act as a way of maintaining the status quo. I am always frustrated by the lack of unity that exist within these movements. I saw Leslie Feinberg (trans write, activist, unionist, etc.) talk last thursday and she made a very similar point to Vince about the fragmentation of social movements, and that in order to make progressive social change it is vital that you realize you are a part of a larger struggle that expands race, class, gender and sexual orientation. I think music offers a unique medium to work for social change, and that it important that more musicians, like Vince, realize the importance of them speaking out against injustices, and giving a voice to those that shared common beliefs and values.
