You can look at Goffman's statment in many different ways. I will go with my own personal approach, which is I believe that there is no true "self" and you will never reach a goal of "self perfection". Instead, I believe that through our experiences and other social interations, these influences shape the person that we become. I use to dwell on this concept all the time, thinking that I had lost my self identity and that I was slowly changing into this "self" that I didn't like. I used to do so many things to try and reach this state of optimal self identity, and then I realized that life has a way of shaping you. If you try to fight it, it will only frustrate you, roll with the punches, embrace and fufill the personal needs that make you happy.
