Subject: Teacher/Student relationships according to Coles

On page twenty-four of Robert Coles’ book, he addressed an issue that I’ve never thought of before. He described the teacher/student relationship as more than that of a knowledgeable person teaching another. I really liked the way he used the phrase, “it takes two to tango.” He insists that a teacher learns from his or her students just as much as the student gathers from the teacher. He explains that information can easily be memorized and regurgitated, but for it to truly be learned, it must find a “life in our lives.” We must extend deeper meaning that relates to our lives for us to fully understand what we are asked to learn. What I dont understand is how we can relate everything we learn in a classroom setting to our daily lives to get the most out of the classes we are currently taking. I mean, if you think about all the ridiculous classes we are forced to take to earn a degree, it makes me somewhat skeptical to why we need to learn the many things we do as core requirements when we cannot apply them to our daily lives.
