Phil made some really interesting points about music and its political implications. I think that it is hard to ignore that almost everything you do within your daily life has some kind of political/social implications. "The personal as political" has been a popular slogan for 2nd wave feminist, and when thinking about all of the personal decision that you make within your lifetime there are definitely larger implications, such as using birth control or having an abortion if you become pregnant. While those are both very personal decision there is the larger political debate about reproductive right that influence the access you have to those resources. The statement he made about Brittany Spears' music killing people came across as a little shocking, but I think the point that he was trying to make it within the system of capitalism that we live in there are people being exploited and maybe even dying to produce all of the merchandise that she endorses i.e. Pepsi factories are probably using cheap 3rd world labor, polluting the environment, etc. Especially since we live in the US and our country and our corporations have so much power throughout the world it is important that you realize that your personal decisions here are having a impact on people around the world and in your own community. No individual lives in a vaccuum.
