GWHL Waiver Draft

DC Shay is a staff reporter for ESPM

Action is expected to be tense this weekend when the GWHL meets in Toronto to recycle players. The waiver draft is highlighted by two future hall of famers left exposed by their teams, Luc Robataille and Mark Messier. Toronto will choose first, followed by Charlottetown, and Whitehorse.

Many teams are exposing high salary players in the hopes of trimming their payroll. Others are hoping to acquire able players to plug into their depth charts. Players under 25 are not eligible, making the waiver draft a good tool for teams looking to add a few pieces to the current roster. A complete listing of available players can be found at the GWHL’s official site.

Rumors that Toronto will take aging goaltender Dwayne Roloson have been circulating all week. Toronto head man James Wiese isn’t tipping his hand, but all indications are that he will take Roloson off the board. Regardless, Toronto will likely grab a solid roster player. Toronto will probably release one of its many goaltending assets when it chooses Roloson. There is no word yet whether Roloson will do color commentary for Toronto if and when he is scratched.

The waiver draft is also one of the largest collections of GWHL executives of the year. Whenever the GMs meet, flurry of trade rumors come out. ESPM will be there for you should any transactions occur.

The complete draft order is as follows:
1 Toronto
2 Chrlt'town
3 Whitehorse
4 London
5 Quebec
6 Victoria
7 Saskatoon
8 Calgary
9 Steeltown
10 Montreal
11 Yellowknif
12 Winnipeg
13 B.C.
14 Edmonton
15 Ottawa
16 Halifax
