Subject: Marauders Still Muddling

Montreal, PQ - With over a quarter of the season in the rear-view mirror, the supposed up-and-coming Marauders are neither up nor coming...as in coming to the playoffs. Currently mired in the fifth spot in the Conference, the Marauders have had a hard time winning games consistently.

Looking at individual efforts, the team would be a shoo-in for a playoff nod, with players like Keith Tkachuk, Todd Bertuzzi, Brad Richards and Mark Parrish enjoying career-year numbers thusfar. Additionally, the team is among the league leaders in goals scored and goalie Evgeny Nabokov is flirting with a top-five ranking in several categories.

Add to that the Marauders' impressive road record (8-3-1) and it would appear that the Montreal horses are all pulling in the same direction. How then, can this team be 12-11-2 and outside looking in on the playoff berths?

"Inconsistency, pure and simple," said GM Sean Gallagher, "the teams ahead of us are beating all the teams they should beat AND they are winning at home. I love a good road record, but 4-8-1 at home is atrocious. We need to protect our home ice better and give the fans what they want."

The Marauders are rumored to be searching for a marquee defenseman, but talks are said to have been poor on all fronts.

"For now," said Gallagher, "I need more out of the guys who are here. The forwards, as a group have put up good numbers, but some guys need to pay more attention to the defensive side of the game. My defensive corps has been on-or-off. So maybe they need a shake up. If they play the way I know they can, we'll be fine and no one will have to be traded."

It's believed that many members of the defense and several farm team players have been packaged in offers for upgrade defensemen.

"Again, and as always, I will consider any deal that I believe will improve this team," said Gallagher.
