Winnipeg – On Tuesday evening, the GWHL held it’s 5th Awards night, and besides one reporter getting drunk and making an ass of himself, it was a wonderful evening. Joe Sakic moved into some very elite company as he won four awards, making that seven in the past two seasons. As for all time wins, he trails only Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr who have 8 and 7 to their credit respectively.

Adding to Sakic’s trophy case was the Howe award for the league’s outstanding player. He also won the Keon, the Esposito, and the Mikita award. It was a special night for Sakic, who had the second best single award night second only to the legendary Lemieux.

One of the most interesting developments of the evening was once again Sakic’s team Calgary winning the Perreault for the fourth time in just six years. The award should be renamed after Calgary’s chief scout! This year’s winner was Marian Gaborik. Nik Lidstrom took the Orr title again for the second season in a row and now moves one ahead of Chris Pronger in their head to head battle.

The biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for an emotional Scott Stevens as he received a raucous standing ovation from the sold out crowd at the Burton Cummings Theatre. The ovation must have gone on for five minutes as the many fans and colleagues cheered wildly for the veteran who grabbed his first ever award, winning the Langway for best defensive defenseman. Other first time winners included Evgeni Nabokov winning the Sawchuk and the Dryden, Vincent Lecavalier for the Dionne and tied for the Esposito with Sakic, Bill Guerin literally beating the competition for the Jethro, and Eric Lindros winning the Big “M” for the playoff MVP.

For the first time ever, three players shared the Hull award as the top goal scorer in the league. All were first time winners of awards as well, which was the common theme of the evening. Sharing the trophy were Marian Hossa, Eric Daze, and Daniel Alfredsson. John Torterella was rewarded for the huge improvement in Montreal winning the Arbour trophy. Torterella joins an elite group that includes Scotty Bowman and Ken Hitchcock. Nikolai Khabibulin made his first ever trip to the podium and accepted the Tony “O” trophy for the best GAA in the league.

Other winners were Rod Brind’Amour, Dean Belanger, Stephen Holodinsky, and the Marauders for best reporter.

In a very classy move, all of the winners gave the money they were to receive to the Red Cross in aid of the Tsunami victims.
