(HALIFAX)-Sometimes if it isn't for bad luck, a team doesn't have any luck at all. The Halifax Harpoons must be thinking something along those lines after losing Joe Thornton the day after Sean Burke was cleared to play and Eric Lindros was cleared to practice.

It happened in the second period when Thornton and Todd Bertuzzi were fighting in the Whitehorse corner for the puck. Bertuzzi's stick came up and clipped Thornton and in turning to cover his face Big Joe went down awkwardly in the corner landing on his elbow. "I don't believe some of the liberties the refs are allowing other teams to take with us," complained Coach Andy Murray after the game. "At least Bertuzzi got the game for the highstick."

Oh yes, the game. Halifax came out strong in the first period, especially Mark Messier who thanks to Lindros' injury was getting extra time down the middle. A pair of goals by the veteran pivot had the two teams tied after one. Owen Nolan and Kent manderville replied for the visitors. The second period was all Halifax as the outshot Whitehorse 14 to 8 and tallied two more goals by Peter Bondra and Brian Leetch to go up 4-2 after 40 minutes. Then the roof fell in.

Sean Burke showing signs of rust in his first start in 3 weeks wiffed on Petr Nedved's long shot at the 2:00 mark and that gave some life to the Warriors who had been held back from the end of the first period. Another goal by Calle Johansson tierd the game setting it up for Rob Brind'Amours late game heroics at 19:10 when he banged the puck past Burke in a goalmouth scramble. Try as the Harpoons might they failed to tie the game up in the last 50 seconds with the goalie out.

"Those two points in the bank for Whitehorse are my fault," Burke said after the game. "I've got to be better than that, especially with the playoffs just around the corner."
