[Saskatoon, Sas.] With the GWHL Draft just a week away, Saskatoon Silos GM Ken McKenna and his scouting staff are busy poring over reports on draft prospects. The GM is also said to be working the phones in the hopes of making deals which would further re-shape the club.

Although not confirmed, players that could be available include leading scorer Robert Lang and top defenseman Janne Niinimaa, as well as star goaltenders Tommy Salo and Curtis Joseph.

Other veterans that would be useful additions to contenders, such as Martin Gelinas (26 goals, 56 points), Dave Karpa (344 PIM, 129 hits), Pascal Rheaume (12 goals, +8, 85 hits) and Mike Leclerc (18 goals, 46 points), could also be on the move if the right deal presents itself.

In return, the Silos are said to be interested in young players, prospects or picks, which is in keeping with the rebuilding effort that began in the last offseason.

McKenna acknowledged that making these kinds of deals will be tough on the box office numbers, but will eventually have his team in a very good position.

"I'm sure the fans hate seeing mentions of star players being moved," said the GM. "We don't take great joy in moving these players, since they have been very productive for us since we took over the team. If the right deals don't come along, though, then they'll still be in our lineup."

Silo Siftings: it is expected that prized young defenseman Barrett Jackman will make his debut with the Silos this season. "We've had a couple of offers for him," said McKenna, "but it would take one heck of an offer for us to move him."...The Silos are said to be extremely pleased with the progress that prospect Tuomo Ruutu has made this season, and are also impressed with the likes of Anton Volchenkov, Derek Roy, Jeff Taffe and Fred Sjostrom. "Our scouts have done a good job of finding talent for our club," enthused the GM, "now we need to develop them into better players."...McKenna also believes that Silos fans will be happy with young snipers Timofei Shishkanov and Jason Pominville. Said McKenna, "Those two guys aren't as close as some of the others, but they'll make an impact when they get here."
