(HALIFAX)- The Halifax Harpoons became the second team in the GWHL to top 30 points in the standings yesterday with a 5-4 win over the Steeltown Hammers. It was a close game that was highlighted by some new line combinations for the homeside. All four lines saw some change as Peter Bondra was inserted into the top line instead of Milan Hejduk who took his place on the second line. "When Hejduk was down we tried Peter there and the line really took off," explained Coach Andy Murray. "It only made sense to try him there again." Again the results were favourable as the trio of Marian Hossa, Eric Lindros, and Bondra singledhandedly dismantled the Steeltown defense, accounting for 4 goals and 5 assists in the victory with the latter netting a hattrick. Zigmund Palffy, skating with Ron Francis and Jeff O'Neill, a combination that saw much success last year, scored the other Halifax goal popping in a Matthias Ohlund rebound to get the home team started at 9:38 of the first period. The other trio Shawn Bates, Joe Thornton, and Milan Hejduk, didn't account for any points but both Hejduk and Thornton had 3 shots on goal. The other problem spot for the Harpoons, their powerplay, struck for the winning goal, Bondra's third, at 18:24 of the third and went 1 for 2 on the night. "It's sure nice to finally see some results with the man advantage," spoke a relieved Eric Lindros. "We had really been stinking it up there for the past while. Now we've got to take this small success and keep it working for us."
Catch of the day: The Harpoons made a deal with the B.C. Huskies on Friday trading farmhand Jason Woolley for Joe Nieuwendyk and prospect Brad Ference. It was a move prompted on B.C.s part by the fact that they were well over the salary cap after having dealt with Winnipeg for Teemu Selanne. It is doubtful whether Nieuwendyk has enough game left to supplant any of the Halifax centers on the roster, however the real prize here could be Brad Ference. A tough young defender with offensive upside, he's seen as a young Adam Foote and could pay dividends down the road.
