The big smile on Saskatoon Silos' coach Bob Hartley said it all after his charges turned in their best performance of the 2003 season, an 8-0 whipping of the Quebec Remparts. The victory continues the recent improved play of the Silos, which was thought by many to be long overdue.
Leading the way for the Silos were the game's three stars- Robert Lang, John LeClair and Filip Kuba. Lang turned in a 4-point game, while LeClair and Kuba notched 3 points each. Nik Khabibulin pitched his second shutout of the season, stopping all 23 shots he faced.
"When this team puts it all together like they did tonight", opined coach Hartley, "they can turn in a pretty devestating performance. It feels like things are starting to come together, on both offense and defense; if we can keep it up, we should be able to get back into the playoff race."
Following the Quebec game, Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna made the somewhat surprising announcement that the team had traded star left winger Brendan Shanahan and center Per Svartvadet to the Charlottetown Islanders. Coming back to the Silos is center/left wing Todd Marchant, prospect Fredrik Sjostrom, and a 2007 3rd round draft pick.
"Brendan is a great player", stated McKenna, "but we were having a hard time figuring out where to use him in our lineup. Shanny is a top-6 forward, but our top-6 seems to be solidified, particularly since we acquired LeClair. Per is an emerging checking center in this league, but we had to include him in the deal to get it done."
Marchant should be a good fit on Saskatoon's third line, while also being a definite plus for the improving penalty killing unit. "Todd has great speed to go along with his defensive smarts, so he should certainly help improve the overall defensive ability of the team."
Sjostrom is currently playing for the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL. "Our scouts have said some good things about him, but he is still developing", said McKenna. "He's one of those guys that could be a boom-or-bust proposition, but we like his potential well enough to take a chance on him."
