The Calgary Cougars have a long-standing history of instability between the pipes. Last year, Arturs Irbe and Mike Vernon split the duties in the regular season, only to have Trevor Kidd step up in the playoffs and take the Cats to their first GWHL championship. This year, Trevor Kidd was expected to be the starter, with Irbe as his backup. However Irbe’s struggles in the preseason and early regular season saw his demotion to Red Deer, and Fred Braithwaite was brought up to back Kidd up. However Braithwaite’s performance as backup proved impressive (at least by Calgary standards), and he was given the chance of regular starts. His pair of recent wins against the league leading Halifax Harpoons has solidified his grip on the starters job. Craig MacTavish admits he’s been pleasantly surprised. “Freddy’s looked really sharp for us. The guys seem to feed of his loose relaxed style, and feel confident enough in their own end to be a little more creative on offence. As long as he keeps chalking up the wins he’s going to be getting the nod”.

After today’s 3-1 win over Halifax, the 2 teams announced a deal, which the Cougars hope will solidify their goaltending situation for the future. Heading east to Halifax is Vaclav Prospal. In return the Cougars get their future franchise goaltender in Dan Blackburn. “ Anytime you can add a 19 year old goaltender of this calibre, you have to jump on it. Prospal has been working very hard down in Red Deer for us, and with the offseason regime he has planned, there’s no doubt he would have been playing with the big club next year. But all of our current goaltenders are getting up there in years, and the only legit goaltending prospect we have is Jussi Markananen, who while solid isn’t young either. With the addition of Blackburn, we feel we’ve filled a very big hole that’s been a concern for a while.” Blackburn will report to the Cougar’s minor league team in Red Deer.
