Thanks for the information. I�m just a shade tree welder and have had no formal training. I guess I�ve seen the black scale on steel before, but it didn�t seem to be a problem with my stick welder.

But with the MIG welder, it does seem to cause me some problems. I will take your advice and hit it with a grinder next time.

After reading your post, I did some searching on �scale� �weld� steel� etc. I found some additional info on �mill scale� which is what you describe on hot rolled steel. Apparently it just forms naturally during the hot rolling process.
