Thanks for the information. I’m just a shade tree welder and have had no formal training. I guess I’ve seen the black scale on steel before, but it didn’t seem to be a problem with my stick welder.

But with the MIG welder, it does seem to cause me some problems. I will take your advice and hit it with a grinder next time.

After reading your post, I did some searching on “scale” “weld” steel” etc. I found some additional info on “mill scale” which is what you describe on hot rolled steel. Apparently it just forms naturally during the hot rolling process.
