I have done this myself, blank off one end of the pipe with rubber or nylon bung which has a 1/4" pipe in a hole to feed Argon into, the other end needs to have a bung but with a small hole. Allow the gas to fill the area and push out the oxygen, the argon should be flowing in at about 10L/min, you should be able to calculate the time to pass your welding point. By welding this way any impurities are pushed out and the pressure keeps the weld nice and flush inside. We did this a lot with wine lines in a winery and it worked well, you could even send cleaning pigs down and they wouldn't get caught up.
