if you can get your hands on this book:
American Society of Metals vol.6 Welding & Brazing 8th edition or 9th edition.
it will and should answer all your welding questions.

regarding dc welding aluminum.

the gas ratio: 5-8% argon 92-95% helium (the argon is used to stabilize the arc. i use 2% thor. tungsten min. 1/8" dia. sharpened to a long point. from point to actual 1/8" dia. the taper extends about 5/8" to 3/4".
poliarity setting DC straight.
the surface should be cleaned prior to welding with a stainless steel brush.
this process is extremely hot and fast. i use this method in welding thick to thin for ex. 1/2" alum to 16 ga.
