Hi Allie,
I second your concerns about Kohlberg's theories and culture/religion. I disagree a little bit in that I think his theory is about morality as an entity distinct from religion (though many people draw their morals from their religious beliefs), but I do agree that it is greatly culturally biased - which I think any theory of moral development would be. Morals seem to be integral foundation that culture is built upon, as they govern daily interaction patterns, learning processes, and societal structures. So, I bet any theory of moral development would be at least somehow biased with regards to culture. And I definitely agree that the last two stages could be reversed - so even the hierarchy he proposed is subjective to an extent.

I use Erikson a lot in my work with patients and families in the hospital setting - awareness of where the child should fall on his hierarchy helps me plan play therapy interventions appropriately. I see how this could be very helpful in the hospital setting as well. The question I am left with though, is what do you do with those who seem to be caught in between stages? Would Erikson suggest that this is even possible? Do you really have to complete resolve a task before you can move forward?
