>This posting has several parts:
1) What do you like and dislike about Kohlberg's theory of moral development? What is it in this theory that speaks to you personally? In which stage of moral development would you place yourself? Why?
I like Kohlberg’s theory because there is an easy progression that is seen in each stage. I think the progression makes sense and one can see what stage his/her client is in during counseling rather easy. I also like how Kohlberg took initiative to add the 4½ stage. I think this stage covers a lot of generation X individuals. When I think of people in this stage I visualize a person who says they are republican, yet vote democratically on many aspects of government. They are the people who take a stand on some things, but sit back on other things. I think many people fall into this category and I think Kohlberg’s idea to add this stage was very wise. A limitation in Kohlberg’s moral theory is its application to all cultures. Not all cultures can relate to Kohlberg’s idea of moral development. What is fair in the US may not be fair in other cultures. Laws and human rights may not be the center of moral development in other cultures, therefore, I think his theory may lack in that area. I personally like his theory. When learning about it, I found myself thinking about the kids I work with and what stage they are in. It was easy for me to pick out the different stages. It gave me some explanations as to why some of my youth think and act the way they do. I would place myself in Stage 5 of moral development. I think I am able to take other perspectives into account in my decision making and reason for the good of others.
2) What do you like and dislike about Erikson's theory of self-development? What is it in this theory that speaks to you personally? In which crisis to you find yourself? Why?
I really like Erikson’s theory of self-development. I always have been a fan of his theory. His theory also provides different stages that are pretty identifiable in others. I like how his theory also provides reasoning as to why the individual may be in crisis and ways to cater to that crisis. As a woman whom is thinking about beginning a family soon, this theory really speaks to me. I understand that human development is different for everyone, but Erikson provides a template that gives hope to positive development. I think that some of his stages are too broad and do not cover everything an individual may be going through during that time in their life. For instance, stage 7 covers generativity v stagnation. However, there are many other things a person is faced with during that time in their life. Their career is another huge area of development and I do not think that is taken into account during this stage. If I had to pick a stage I am in I would pick stage 7..oh I feel old saying that. However, I feel like I have passed the other stages thus far. I do not have children of my own, however, I do work with kids everyday. Therefore, I feel like I am doing my part to help the future generations at this point. I am happily married and plan to start a family soon in which this stage will become more solid.
3) Of the two theories, which is most relevant to your career/ major/life? Why? How would you use these theories?
I think Erikson’s theory is most relevant to my career and life. I work with many youth who are all over the place in their development. Erikson’s theory really gives a template for me to work with in working with the kids I have. Using his theory can give me some ideas as to how to work through the current stage they are in and provide ways for them to positively proceed throughout the stages. In return, I believe that they will also enhance their moral development through their progression in Erikson’s stages. All in all I think one plays into the other and development can be seen all around.
