I think you really pointed out something important when you said that some of the stages are too broad and don't cover everything a person may be going through at that time. You used the example of Stage 7, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and you're absolutely correct that this is a complicated time of life that may include being a caretaker of one's parents (and possibly dealing with death) as well as taking care of one's children while also working on one's career.

And look how many of us feel that we are in stage 7 right now. You are newly married and will soon start a family. I have been married 28 years and have one child in college and the other in grad school. So stage 7 covers a wide swath and encompasses many different challenges.
