Thank you for input, Brooke. I want to explain my reasoning a little more in depth because I feel my overall message isn't coming across correctly.

Example Scenario:
You are dealing with a junior in high school who has begun the process of searching for colleges. Mommy and Daddy have always told Jane that she would make an excellent nurse because she likes to care for people when they are sick. Jane has come to believe that nursing is what is best for her because this is the only profession her parents have recommended to her. Jane only looks for schools with good nursing programs.

Relation to Theories:
Jane is in the midst of Erikson's Stage 5 (Identity v. Identity Confusion). She is also in Kohlberg's Stage 3 (mutual interpersonal expectations, relationships & conformity stage). If you as a teacher or counselor do not help Jane begin to think for herself instead of trying to please her parents, no advancement can be made in terms of helping her find her identity.

Hope that example shows what I was trying to say by the two theories working together. Of course, you may still disagree which is okay, but personally, I cannot see one without the other.
