1. I was most struck by the link that Kohlberg drew between cognitive development and moral development and found that it made a lot of sense to me. It would be illogical for us to expect a person to make moral decisions and judgements that are on a level that they are unable to cognitively comprehend, however it is something that is done often, particularly in the school system. It is important for me as a counselor and a parent to be aware of this and ensure that I am not expecting more morally from the children I am in contact with than they are cognitively capable of giving.
I consider myself in Stage 6 of Kohlberg’s moral development. I have a very strong sense of social responsibility and the need to give back to others and help educate others about respecting one another and caring for one another. It is one of the things that has most drawn me to the field of counseling, particularly school counseling where things like ability to pay or opportunity to get to an office for a session, are removed and children are simply able to get the help that they need to receive. For me it is important to differentiate between what is morally and ethically right and what may or may not be legal and to be able to walk that line while respecting both sides of the issue.

2. While reading and exploring Erikson’s theory of self-development I again found myself nodding and agreeing with a number of things that were being said and even finding examples of individuals in my own life who exemplified each stage of development. I like that the theory is so relatable and that for me, it was easy to look around and see it in action around me. I also really liked that it takes into account societal and cultural influences and that it states that it is possible to go back to a stage to assess what was not successfully resolved there and make necessary corrections.
I didn’t agree with all of the pathologies that it states may result from not successfully completing each stage but I do see where those ideas would come from however.
I am in Stage 7, Generativity v. Stagnation, of Erikson’s development. At this point in my life my focus is on raising my two sons to be productive, contributing members of society who are caring, understanding, kind and just generally well-rounded young men. This desire to teach and care for the next generation is also reflected in my desire to go into the field of school counseling.

3. I don’t know that I can say which is theory is most relevant to my life and career because I can and do see myself relying on both of them often. I believe that by studying and knowing them together, I can improve myself as a mother, counselor and individual. I will use them not only to understand where my students are coming from but also to help assess where they need to be going and how I can best help them reach their goals.
