A few years back I tutored for a charter school to prepare them for TCAP, particularly in Math and Reading. Although some students enjoyed the one-on-one learning and a chance to get out of class for a half hour to hour, there were others who were not as enthused. After doing a bit of background research on the students, I realized that the enthusiastic students had high to average scores on previous TCAP, while the less enthused had below average or failing scores. This coincides with the social learning of the expectancy theory.
I did not have problems with performing tutoring activities with the higher scored students. However, I had to find a way for the other students to engage in the activities, because the students encountering “expectancy for failure” assumed there was no use in preparing for something that they were not going to do well. One method I use was to turn the tutoring materials into games, like store (counting money) and story creations to enhance reading comprehension. The program did not allow tutors to bring treats and prizes to the students, so their rewards were scores they have gained in the games and the scores increased by the end of the tutoring year.
