I agree that it seems unfair that such tests could be used in a high stakes manner. Like you said, if we're using these tests to decide if someone should be placed in special ed services, why not use an academic test? I do not think your ability to solve pattern recognition problems will have much bearing on your grades. With that said, there is probably some correlation between these scores and academic scores, but it seems unnecessary.
