Like I stated earlier, I am a rehabilitation counseling student. Last semester I had the privilege of working at local mental health hospital's outpatient counseling unit. It was there that I saw social learning theory in full force. The program was mostly group counseling based and I got to know individuals on a personal basis. There are two clients that stick out in my mind that are clear examples the social learning theory. First, I got to know a client that was having chemical dependency issues with cocaine and alcohol. Although chemical dependency issues have that "addiction" component, most of the clients issues were from earlier learned behaviors in a social setting. In this case, the client was only doing drugs and providing others with drugs because of her social community she grew up in, and the view towards others in that community who did drugs and were apart of the "in" crowd. She had learned from her peers that doing drugs and being apart of that lifestyle was the cool and right thing to do, especially to be accepted in her neighborhood. This is a clear example of the social learning theory because these behaviors were learned in her social context and reinforced by her peers. Another client I helped for sometime while at the hospital had clear anger issues. She had threatened others many times with physical violence including her own family and co-workers. Getting to know her better and better, it was then discovered that she had grown up in a very violent home and was around physical abuse concerning her own parents since she was a young child. Like Bandura's Bobo doll experiment, she observed violence for most of her life and had learned that violence and anger were the only ways to handle situations because she viewed her parents doing the same. Again, this client learned her behaviors from the social environment she grew up in. I think by the client already being apart of the outpatient counseling unit was the first and main step of the solution. It is also important when interacting with others in the group that they see what is acceptable behavior that new social environment they have chose to take part in. Although a system of punishments and rewards were not apart of the program, the main goal or reward was to complete the program and that in itself was the main reinforcer for changing the learned behavior, because they were already aware it was unacceptable to society at that stage in treatment. It is very interesting to see see just how these theories can truly relate to real life everyday situations.
