I saw some of this when I taught for two years at a Title I school. Most of the children came from neighborhoods with a lot of violence, gang activity and drugs. As early as kindergarten, the children were adopting some of the behaviors they saw out on the streets, from flashing gang signs to ganging up on kids on the playground. It was overwhelming at times trying to teach when there were so many other issues going on in their lives. The teaching program I was a part of challenged us to focus on our internal locus of control as we stepped into classrooms full of children who were struggling to keep up with standards. Rather than getting bogged down by all that I could not control, I had to focus on the things I could control. It was a good lesson for me to remember that though our environments shape us, we all have the power to rise above our circumstances.
