I have no doubt that letting the children help create the rules and teaching them from the first day is absolutely critical in classroom management. I have found that all of my rules boil down to one basic principle: respect. I usually try to keep my list of rules down to 5 or less. However, it really helps if there is consistency beginning with the principal. If the rules are enforced inconsistently around the school, I notice that behavior starts to slip and classroom management becomes much more difficult.
