I have been in touch with Dicky Broughton about a venue he uses for functions, I have attended a couple, it is an excellent venue in Grantham which also has plenty of accommodation both B&B and hotels. He has told me the venue would be available for hire at £150, if we could get at least 75 people it would work out £2 per head. Dicky also says he can arrange a disco. We need now to name a date (October) so if everybody agrees, lets go for it.

Hi, I was directed to this site by a gentleman who got in touch with me over facebook. I am hoping that someone may have some infortion on L/Bdr David Tilbury, he was unfortunately killed in 1971 in N.I at Rosemount RUC. I just wish to know where else he served?! what was he like as a person?! and if any one has any photos of him?! Dave is my 2nd cousin and I intend to keep his memory alive, but to do this I need as much information as I can get, as unfortunately his father died shortley after him, and it seems Daves story died with him. how to start.....to such a sad subject.....It seems only yesterday that Dave went on that fateful duty in the sanger at rosemount police station. I remember it because he wanted to buy a philips tape rcorder off me so that he could give it to his sister as a birthday present. I used to think of him as the 'gentle giant' with an easy-going manner, no matter how flustered everyone else got, he seemed to have a calming influence on all around him. I wish I had a photo, but over the years, I lost quite a lot of my army photos, such a shame. I have never forgotten him and always remember on Poppy Day.

Sorry for not replying sooner but I lost this link for a while. I would love a photo of Dave as my memory isn't what it used to be.

As I remember, Dave was always a happy person that appeared not to have a care in the world except for those around him. You always knew you could rely on him to make light of any situation you happened to be in. He was one of the most friendly of colleges I had ever met. I would imagine that anyone who came in contact with him would never forget that calm, gentle giant.

Every time I used to hear the song 'big bad john', it used to remind me of him.

I am hopinh to attend the next reunion 2012./

Having spent the past year researching family amd the fami.ies Military history I have dug out lots from my 27GW Regt days. People lookat at me like ianm making it up when I rtecall stories from the 60s

I served with HQ bty (a couple of time) Once sgt of the Custodial troop,what days!!
I was with 6 Bty I came along with Maj Preston as I was his Dvbr/op in those days. when in camp I worked with Ginger the BQMS. Like I should talk as I was Ginger too.I then took over the Sigs troop. the now Gen Sir Burton was a 2lt still at uni but he was a real good officer even at the tender age of 19.
After the Conversion in 66 then another one I was leeft behind to handover the Bks to 36 Thunderbird Regt but after a couple on months I moved myself and family to Wales .Then i was recalled to devizes,funy that I lived there in `94o -42 as a baby.

I then moved to 104 Lt Ad Regt Newprot Mon.

Hi to all you sixers.

The regimental site has had a lot of work done to it over the last year and is probably the best gunner site on the web.
I don't want to take away anything Dai has done because I advised him how to set the 6 Bty site up originally and I'm not asking you to leave this site either. Why not pay the odd visit to the regimental site. There is a lot of banter on the guestbook and some of it involves you sixers. It is updated most days and is a great way of passing messages and keeping in touch. I also have about 500 contact addresses if you need to get hold of anyone.

long time no hear, due to work commitments not been able to get to write anything on the shinysix website, Nice to see BG is making an effort. Well Taff Macgillvary havn´t seen or heard from you for a while. What a coincedence you working and living in manchester, i must have been a least 50 times in the past 3 years in manchester. In the Trafford center there´s a german kitchen shop called Kutchen Haus, that is one of our shops, the warehouse is in textile road, that´s where i deliver the kitchens too.Might be across in 3 weeks time so i let you know exactly what day and time so if you have time you can call in on you patrols. Malcom you have missed some very good reunions organised by Dai Edwards. Lots of shinysixers turn up to the reunions mainly from the 70´s and 80´s time. Also there is a Regimental Reunion here in Lippstadt in i believe sept costs at the moment 15 pounds ahead. So enough waffle mal keep in touch.

Hi to you all,
I can see that the Lippy Party is gathering momentum and I hope you all have a great time. There are a couple of things I want to mention and the first is a big thank you to Dave Abbott for updating the site and keeping it secure. I know that I get a fair amount of thanks for the maintenance and continued running of the site but Dave is the one who works quietly in the background keeping everything the way it should be. Good job and very much appreciated.
The second subject is that of the 2012 reunion. With the Lippstadt venue being of prime importance I don't want to start obliterating the site with another reunion. It would detract from the Lippstadt party and I'm not sure that I would get a good turnout. I need to book a year in advance so I am going to take the decision to alter the dates for 2012 and try and get a reunion for September 2012. I still think SandBay serves its purpose both for venue and price but the ball is in your court. If you want it somewhere else come up with some ideas but make sure they are viable and cover entertainment and food, otherwise it is too expensive for some. The aim is to get maximum attendance.
I will leave it like that for the time being and that will give you all time to think about what you want.

I know how Dai feels as the regimental site also goes through these phases of inactivity. The 6 Bty site has been really well used in the past and all the comments you have used are true. Facebook is a challenge to our sites but there is still a place for them. Dai don't throw in the towel just yet. The popularity will return and banter from the likes of Mick and BG tell you how strongly they feel about your site.
Keep it going but dont forget guys that there is also a regimental site crying out for a visit now and then.

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the sudden passing of Bob Sims. This came as a great shock to me after seeing him at the reunion and he seemed in great spirit as usual. I insert the email I have received from Carol and will let you know the arrangement details as they become available. I pass on our most sincere condolences from all ex members of the regiment and our hearts go out to Carol.

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that Bob died suddenly, yesterday, after suffering what appears to have been a major heart attack. He had had a minor one on the 6th September and was doing very well and was very positive. However yesterday, just after we'd had tea, he collapsed and although the ambulance crew worked very hard they were unable to save him.
No arrangements have yet been made, but when they are I will inform you and would be greatful if you would post them on 27's web site for me.

What a shock to learn of the passing of such a 'big character'. Gobby Bobby, as he was affectionately known, was always someone who met life full on. I last saw him at the Coventry reunion and he hadnt changed a bit. My condolences to Bob's family.

Lippstadt Reunion 2011


The Date has been set for the Lippstadt party its 16 - 18 Sept 2011, the idea is to take over one or more hotels in or around the Lippstadt area, one of them with a function room as the plan is to have a knees up on the Saturday night this will need to be paid for prior to arriving in Lippstadt

The hotel rooms will need to be booked and paid for by yourselves a list of Hotels and B&Bs will be added to the message board once I get an idea of numbers.

Can those who are interested please let me know by E mail dtj@wightcablenorth.net or by phone (Home 01228 380650 - Mobile 07502438725) so that I can give Bill Mennie an idea of the amount of rooms required, as he is the one who is doing the hard work over there.

For those that haven’t been back to Lippstadt you can fly from most UK airports into Lippstadt/Paderborn airport. Car hire is available at the airport.

This is only the planning stage but it is important for me to get an estimate of those who are interested so that Bill can start looking at accommodation and prices.
If there is sufficient interest I will also try to book a minibus for a tour of the camp and ex married quarters, places of interest etc. Again if you are interested in this please let me know as the numbers will affect the costing and the bus will have to be paid for in advance.
That’s it for now so please contact me ASP and I will keep you updated on the numbers attending.

It seems that we southerners have to educate you Neanderthals in the north yet again; it also appears from the response received I will have to take this one-step at a time for you & your fellow cave men to understand the intricacy of using a receptacle known as the Toilet, so this is were one will kick off.

The Name - Toilet:

In ones previous comment, the explanation that one has explained is part of the disposing of bodily waist in a receptacle that is commonly known as “The Toilet”. Other common names although not exhaustive are, The Dunny, Thunderbox, Crapper, Latrine, Lavatory, Shitter, Bog, Loo, Head, Potty, The Can, Privvie, Throne, Shit Eater, Poop Depositary, Rus Limbaughs Mouth, Shit House, John, The Stool, Pot, Pot Hole, The Facility, Bulk Head, Comfort Station, Ditch, Think & Stink, Confessional, Dooblevay Say, Al Bundays Office, Quality Time, New York, The Crapper, Turd Aquarium,, The Buttholder, Porcelain God, Ann Coulter & finally The Bus Stop.

These names built up through time epitomises the humour of our fellow Englishmen or should I say southerners! That has stood the test of time, it seems up there you still use a hole in the ground while munching away at the grass thinking of yorky bars & Tetley tea, while we in the south think of good old England & the bliss it brings us of using such a receptacle.

Please pass this on to your fellow “ugs” & they may start to realise the Stone Age finished thousands of years ago & until you do the south will always rule supreme & finally a little poem for you.

Trish and I have just bought a 12 Bedroom Guest house in Hythe near Southampton (part of the retirement plan). Unfortunately (for her) there is a rally of some sorts at the same time as the reunion and we are fully booked so I am forced to attend on my own. If I remember correctly your dad joined about the same time as me and we were in Dortmund in 1965-66. He was promoted to Lbdr and worked in 6 Bty BQMS stores in Lippstadt with Scouse Higgins and Jimmy Hughes. I think he also spoke a bit of german.

Mick Loran Martin was best man at my wedding in 68 in Devizes, he lives in Plymouth but I dont have his address

Thanks for the reply, and i must be honest its is truely amazing who you can find by speaking to 1 guy who served in the same unit as my father. I have spoke with him about yourself and Mike, and cannot believe that i am in contact with fellas who he served with back in the days. I understand you finished as a BSM (WO2) so does that mean i have to call you a sir, lol as i am still serving in the Royal Logistic Corps and have been for the last 21years, and its time to hang up the corp beret and belt very soon.

I remember your dad I used to take the laundry to Sennelager am I right in thinking he is a welsh man and we called him taffy he showed me all the best sites on the way there. Ask him if he remembers the fish farm at the back of the laundry we would throw some bred into the tank and they went mad trying to get it. I hope he is keeping well.

Well, the boss is very shaken by now, but still not totally convinced. After they leave the White house grounds, he expresses his doubts to Bubba, who again implores him to name anyone else. "The Pope," his boss replies. "Sure!" says Bubba. "I've known the Pope a long time." So off they fly to Rome. Bubba and his boss are assembled with the masses in Vatican Square when Bubba says, "This will never work. I can't catch the Pope's eye among all these people. Tell you what, I know all the guards so let me just go upstairs and I'll come out on the balcony with the Pope." And he disappears into the crowd headed toward the Vatican.

Sure enough, half an hour later Bubba emerges with the Pope on the balcony. But by the time Bubba returns, he finds that his boss has had a heart attack and is surrounded by paramedics. Working his way to his boss' side, Bubba asks him, "What happened?"

His boss looks up and says, "I was doing fine until you and the Pope came out on the balcony and the man next to me said, "Who's that on the balcony with Bubba?"

The chief of staff of the US Air Force decided that he would personally intervene in the recruiting crisis affecting all of our armed services. He directed a nearby Air Force base that will be opened and that all eligible young men and women be invited.

As he and his staff were standing near a brand new F-15 Fighter, a pair of twin brothers who looked like they had just stepped off a Marine Corps recruiting poster walked up to them. The chief of staff walked up to them, stuck out his hand and introduced himself.

Hi Guys,
I hate having to keep going on about the reunion but the bookings this year are slow. Each past reunion we have averaged over 250 members. The bookings for this one to date stand at 24 bookings equating to 49 people. The venue was good, entertainment good and the food was also OK, the price is great so what is going wrong. Please, if you intend to go get your bookings in now and quote 27RA.
Some may have booked and not quoted the ref number, if that is the case I cannot get an accurate fix on numbers.
June is a busy month so please book ASP. Please also pass on the details to those not on line.

Hi to you all,

The management at SandBay have been on to me about the bookings for the reunion. They have reserved 100 rooms but only until April when they will be released to the general public. Bookings to date total 49 people yet I know from emails and telephone calls that a lot more of you are intending to go. Please book soonest so as to reserve these rooms. It is also important to quote the booking ref 27RA as this will ensure you get the discounted price and it also keeps our group together.
The last reunion at Sandbay was absolutely brilliant and this should be equally as good, so get on the phone and book now. Full details are on the regimental web site Reunion Page. Two reasons why I’ve replied to your comments on SandBay.

1st & being the most important, I wanted your message at the top of Dai's page so members of 27 OCA read that first & take the message firmly in hand & take the necessary action.

2nd, to let you know I have not booked yet as I'm at present involved (although not running it) in a multi million pound project that may take my time up over that period & maybe the saviour of my centre which hopefully will save jobs etc so I’m sure you understand.

In order to promote further interest in the Regi Reunion is it possible to have Terry’s message regarding the it at the forefront every time someone opens up the message board.

The reason I ask as more & more people put messages on the notice board Terry’s message will keep moving further down the list with the potential of Old Comrades (OCs) missing the info provided.

Admittedly, OCs can check on yours & Terry’s sites for the details, but like a sales pitch if it’s in your face all the time you’ll do something about it.

Another option for who ever reads this is just keep replying to Terry’s message to keep it at the top

One can only assume that when one refers to me as “The Turd” you refer to me as a shit, a piece of excrement or faeces that is composed of digested food which ultimately is discharged from the bowl of ones anus & which eventually ends up on ones shoes only to be scraped off & discarded with a curse of dissatisfaction.

You should always remember that when the rectum expands & passes one of these stools, one always has an aura of happiness, relief & satisfaction on ones faces & therefore one can only deduce that when you refer to me as “The Turd” I bring you joy, contentment & profound excitement in an exercise that you do at least once a day.

Hi Bert, Thanks for your reply, when i left 6 i started work at Kellogg's (yep the cornflake people) there for 26yrs 12 of them as shop steward & chief shop steward, i was retired on health grounds & now work for myself supplying dj eqpt & dj'ing at northern soul venues all around the uk,so most weekends am busy. Sorry its taken so long to reply been working abroad most of summer, hence no chance of attending reunion. hi, I have just seen your message, i live in scarborough, north yorkshire, i worked for 25 years at RAF Fylindales on the ny moors and retired on full pension early, have been married to Diane for 18 years, am at the moment at my brothers Terry d'Alquens home in Lipstat as we come here every year for a week over the new year period, we also meet up with Neil Whiston, we were all together on new years eve for a right good do. No one was told about the reunion in Lipstat in October and Neil and Terry live here so, not very good or we would have all gone, might see you at the next one.

Plenty of notice about the gathering in Lippstadt on this messageboard and the website (Regt'l one as well) and also on facebook. local boys who turned up included Steve Gunning, Dai Rowlands, Ron Allen, Jim Leggate, Jock Reid,
Craig Mclachan would have been there but had to return to UK at the time.
It begs the question why bother with a website or messageboard if pepole dont log in and check whats going on.

What a nice pub Steve Gunning found for us in Lipperode, the welcome was very warm from the staff who served us well through out the evening. Those who attended all stated what a great evening it was. The next evening we all met at the Golden Hahn in the middle of Lippstadt (a very crowded Lippstadt) where Herbsvoche was in full swing. From what I remember of Herbswoche it was mainly centered on the street where Woolworths is (Woolies is still there), but now spreads through every street and side street in town, making it a huge spectacle, especially at night when it is all lit-up. As is common with Herbswoche there were countless beer and bratty stalls and other stalls offering different delicacies. the fair ground rides were all modern versions of old favourites, but seemed to be huge now in comparison, and more terrifying, than when I was ever tempted to ride them. This turned out to be cracking weekend spent with some good old friends, Lippstadt may have changed in so many ways compared to our time there, but what has'nt changed is the enduring friendships from that time.

One can only put this in a few words

“Fantastic company, Fantastic food & a Fantastic Herbswoche

For those that turned up they know what I’m talking about, for those that missed it, there’s no easy way in saying it “You missed a bloody good weekend”

The memories of seeing Lippy & travelling to it after all these years just continued to flood the mind - the bars & clubs we made our own, the restaurants we ate in & the fun we had just added to what can only be described as a magical weekend & both Dee & I will certainly go back.

Steve, thanks for sorting a place to go on the Fri & lovely to meet your good lady & how ironic the football players we bumped into in town after leaving you all on the 1st night just happened to be the players your son plays with – “spooky”.

Dai “E”, Dai “R”, Harry, Terry, Mick, Jock, Steve, Legs, Ron & all your good ladies, thanks for a brilliant weekend, great to see you all & hope you all go back again.

May I thank Steve & Anja for putting up with us & Terry for the Reunion,we were like one happy family.
Those that did turn up had a great time at two fantastic venues,its a pity we could not have made three,but we have to get back to work.
Mick (Turdy)you have all the bad luck;8 hrs over then having to pay extra to get on a earlier ferry back, you will have to follow us over next time, 5&half going-5&half back & did not pay for early ferry,never mind mate.

We will all be meeting up on the Saturday, just need to decide on a place. The idea of getting together on Friday is so we could the lamp-swinging out of the way and then on Saturday enjoy the bright lights of Lippstadt Herbswoche.

Hi to all those Lippstadt bound, Stevie Gunning has booked us room for a get together on the evening of Friday 23rd.
Its a pub in Lipperode called ALTES GASTHAUS VOSS.
Remember this is Herbswoche week and Lippstadt will be very busy. Lipprode is only a couple of minutes from Lippstadt town centre. Having the get together on the Friday evening will leave everybody free to enjoy the Saturday in Lippstadt at whatever is on for Herbsvoche.
Steve also told me he has a neighbour with a taxi business and could, if anybody wanted to, arrange airport transfers etc,Steve's tel no. 0049 02941 657759. Give him a bell if you want transport he will be happy to help.

Some may not be aware of this but Stevie Gunning has been arranging a place for us to go on the Fri night 23 Oct 09 (see comment on Dai's site), depending on the amount that intends on going will depend on the room size the pub/place will allow us to celebrate.

Effectivley, Steve needs to know if you are going, or not, then please let him know via the Shiney-Six website.

Bearing in mind the excellant support & response we get from the German crowd when the reunions are held in the UK, the response to Dai's point in this matter has recieved a poor return with very litle responding to the request.

It's appreciated that some can't afford this "but hey" come on guys it's seconds to put something on the web site?

In a nut shell "get off your Fooking Aris" & get typing?

Just letting you know Me, Dee, Trevor (Harry) & Helen Egan are still going, although with regard to me it depends on the outcome with the police, (speeding on the M40 & minor assault with some prick in a sainsburys car park), no charges hvae been made yet & fingers crossed hopefully nothing will happen until after the reunion - so see you there.

Hi All, just found the site. Fantastic idear to go back to Lippy for a beer. If uv not been back, I was there in 2000 what a shock. The towns prity much the same but our barracks what a transformation, the swimming pool is a carpark and the NAAFI was just being hit by the wrecking crews. The rest Ill leave you to find. Have a great time, Id uv loved to have been there but Im going on a well earned holiday. All the very best to you all.

my dad who recently passed away , served with 27 regiment based at napier barracks (not sure which battery he was with), his name was gunner cole he was stationed there between 63 and 67 , he worked with the honest john and blue streak missiles ,do any of the members remember him or have any pictures of him

Government artillery gunners may have hit their own troops while firing mortars into a Jacobite charge, a new book has suggested.

A chapter in Culloden: The History and Archaeology of the Last Clan Battle said the risk of friendly fire was a "very real one".

Archaeologists found shrapnel from mortar shells close to where frontline infantry had stood.
