I received this email today, can anybody throw any light on the people mentioned.
Dear Sir
I am a member of the Northern Ireland Veterans Association, which is dedicated to the members of the British Army who served and suffered in the province during the Troubles. We not only take great pride in nurturing the memory of those who fell in the service of the crown, but also helping those who have suffered and continue to do so, in the years following the traumas many of them suffered.
On the site we have a 'light a Candle' page where fallen friends can be remembered; one such comrade had left a message for the following Gunner:
'Gunner Jones, not recorded, killed Lurgan 1975, always remembered.'
It has been the experience of some our members that for various reasons, deaths of comrades have not been properly recorded or the details lost. I have been able to ascertain that Gnr B. Jones was a member of 27 Medium Regiment RA and was killed on 9th June 1975. At that time 27 Regt was based at Long Kesh, Portadown and Lurgan (probably the old 'Knicker Factory') but I have not found any mention of his death in any of the usual sources ('Lost lives' etc).
i have found mention also of a Gunner A. Jeal, also of 27 Regt, whose details are not listed. He was killed 11 July 1975. It would appear that somewhere along the line, the unit logs have been mislaid or lost.
If you or any of your colleagues could offer any information on the circumstances of their deaths, I would be very grateful.
I know that I am a total stranger asking for information about what could be considered sensitive matters; however if you wish to visit our website www.nivets.org.uk/ you will get an idea of how we honour our fallen comrades, and how important keeping their memory alive is to us. History has always been at risk from those who would tailor it to suit their own needs - we would try not to let that happen. If you wish, please feel free to confirm my bona fides with our Webmaster.
Any information that you can offer would be treated with total confidentiality, and my only intent is to document the circumstances of their passing for historical record, although I am sure you would agree that all our fallen deserve their sacrifice to be recalled for posterity. Also if you can suggest any other sources of help, I would be very grateful.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this.
Yours sincerely
Stephen King
