In reply to: Clampgirl 's message, "Re: Tokyo Pop" on 08:29:19 08/28/03 Thu

TokyoPop did not cut any explicit sex scenes from "Sailormoon" HOWEVER at the time it was published, the CEO (Stuart Levy) would not allow for any "gay scenes" to be published (they did belittle their relationship, though). Thus we run into a question of ethics: as Mixx, they would not published "gay" manga ("Earthian" was under consideration but was dropped because, well, it is a boy's love title), yet now they publish "Gravitation" and "Fake" ($$$$$$$$). Something about that strikes me as...wrong.

As for them considering "audiences"...if TokyoPop knew that the manga they were publishing was going to offend someone, then perhaps they should not have published it. If they will publish "Fake" and Gravi, both very well known boy's love manga, then why did they need to change the genders in "Wish"? Also, TokyoPop includes age ratings on their manga, and covers the more racy titles (like "Ultra Maniac" or whatever its called) in plastic. Viz, might I point out, doesn't do this. With this in mind, there is no reason for them to change the genders of the characters in "Wish". They can't even begin to justify it.

I also do not believe that a company's translations should alter the original story. TP belittled Haruka and Michiru's relationship in "Sailor Moon" and changed the entire nature of the romances (and world) in "Wish" - a central point of the story - by giving genders to genderless characters. The company had no right to do that, *no* company - be it TP, Viz, One Comics, or Dark Horse - has that right; they are not the creators, the story is not their's to alter, f*ck the audience.

I agree with whoever it was that said Viz did a poor job with "X". After comparing it with Tenno Yuki's translations on Jahannam.net, I sold off all my "X" Viz-ness. But as for that complaint about them flipping the manga and so forth...need I remind you that at one point TokyoPop also flipped manga? Viz is publishing "X" in its original size now, unflipped. Not that I will buy it.

I have nothing against people who buy TP manga, but I won't do it for ethical reasons. Otaku members of Stuart Levy's staff have left the company in protest, and I myself am not sure I like the double nature of TP's "gay scenes" policy. I really do suggest that, if possible, fans should buy the original manga in Japanese. It's cheaper than either the Viz or TP versions, sturdier, prettier, and comes with more thingys. Shipping can be a bit much, but I own...no, we're not going to count, too much raw manga and I dare say its worth it. You can always find translations online, too, for free. If anyone's interested, check out these sites:

http://www.jpqueen.com (used, but cheap-o)

Jahannam.net has translations of "X" and "Tokyo Babylon", as does Rabi's X Page. :)
