I would recommend "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons to just about anyone. It's a extremely well written sci-fi book - a bit on the dark side. The author is well known for writing excellent in all genres, and it shows. Pick this up!
"The Sword of Truth" by Terry Goodkind, is a very creative book, that was a sleeper hit when it came out. It's a fun, creative(emphasize creative) read, with a curious 200 page foray into bondage and sado/masichism. I think that slipped through the editors office, because they expected the book to flop -- but it turned out to be a best seller, and so have the sequels since.
and ofcourse
"The Wheel of Time" Series by Robert Jordan. It is rumored that this series will never end - and at 10 books each about 1000 pages long, its a very convincing rumor. Be that as it may, it is the only series I have ever read for which a critic would claim it has 'surpassed Tolkein.' They are excellent books. *book 1 = "They Eye of the World"
