You would have heard by now that the incumbent Government of Australia led by the Liberal Coalition lost the national elections last night to the Australian Labor Party.
The swing to the new Government was massive. The Labor Party needed to win an extra 16 seats to form a Govt and it has already picked up 22-24 seats.

This brings us to the point of democracy functioning at its fullest.
Australia for 11 years under John Howard and his Coalition Government has developed, prospered and undergoing its best era ever. The Coalition inherited a $30 billion national debt under the previous 6 Labor Governments, a wrecked economy with unemployment at 10%, inflation running as high as 16% p.a, militant Trade Unions and shocking productivity figures.

In those 11 years, the $30 billion debt was paid off, the last 3 annual budgets in surplus, union strikes are at its lowest in Australia's history, unemployment brought down to 4% and inflation is now at around 3%. There is now a shortage of labour, wages have increased by 18% and personal income tax has dropped considerably.

So, you ask - why was the Coalition Government voted out?
This is true democracy funtioning. The key platforms were an Industrial Relations policy (that wasn't part of the Coalition policies when voted in last time), public awareness of climate change (which the Coalition did not embrace until too late) and primarily I suspect, the present Government has been in power for too long (11 years).

I am a Coalition supporter - but I have always emphasize the point (as in past postings) that it is dangerous to have the same people in power for too long. Politicians tend to get arrogant, power obssesive, indifferent attitude that they are mightier than thou, and unfortunately corrupt in their ideas and vision for the people they represent (luckily, in our case, not in lining their own pockets like some overseas countries).

So we may have lost a damn good Government, but we have re-emphasized that true democracy survives in Australia.
It is sombering though that we now have to live with a Government that will have 70% of its Ministerial Cabinet stacked with ex-Trade Union officials (it is the Labor Party after all). I may survive this - but this party is also full of bloody tree hugging, self chaining, 'save the planet' enviromentalists. (Yuk!)

Your time may still come in Malaysia for an equal say in Government..........for the people and by the people.
