I remember that it was off limits however, it always seemed to be crowded.
There was a drug store on the southeast corner of State Street and Michigan Street. It never seemed to be very busy. Does anyone remember it's name or ever go in there.
Keep in touch,
Sam

Hi, I graduated from Tech in 49 and worked in the Evening Division office until March 60. We just called the grill Katies. It was owned byKatie and Morris Silvey. Katie died many years ago from kidney cancer.

Don't know I ever heard a name for the drug store. But they had good hot tamales for $.15.

I remember going into the drug store but not the tamales.
In the same building where the grill was located on the west end, there was a hobby shop on the east end. There were some other stores in the same building but I've long since forgotten what they were.

Re: Name of restaurant across from Tech -- Bruce Eastmond - 1957 (Jr. High), 12:58:09 02/08/12 Wed
During 1955-1957 I was a nerdy little Junior High student, in with 98% older kids on the campus. We had classes in the original arsenal Building.
I used to walk by the Aresnal Grille on my way down Arsenal Avenue to New York Street to catch the bus back home. I remember that there was an exhaust fan on the side of the building, exhausting the sweet odor of Coca Cola (as it was known then) and cigarette smoke. The place was always crowded after school
I was always kind of afraid to go in, due to my diminished class status. It seemed to me that the 1956 Jim Lowe song, "Green Door" was written about the Arsenal Grill!

The name of the drug store located at State and Michigan Sts. was Zinks Drugs; the owner lived on Middle Drive, Woodruff Pl., and his son may have graduated from Tech in 1949. In the same complex was a small Krogers Store and also a Barber Shop. Across the street was a meat market. In the 1940's there were no tamales sold, but great milk shakes at 15 cents.
