Subject: 1951 valedictorians

Hey Glenn,

Clayton and I went to the Arsenal at Tech, and up to the second floor to look at the plaque that had the co-valedictorians on it, and yes, Clayton is listed along with Nancy Shearer for 1951! I thought it was Nancy Foxworthy too. Will you check on this?

I have only broadly based opinions from then and now that Nancy Foxworthy was the primary valedictorian and Ed Landreth was next, and fortunately a boy. It followed that Clayton was third in our class... but Nancy and Ed have passed so who can say? When Nancy died, her daughter seemed to believe that her mother was valedictorian... she didn't invent that opinion.
I presumed that Clayton was selected to carry the 1951 banner leading the class into the graduation ceremony because he was the strongest academic achiever ;^)
I always thought that, regardless of how well meaning the selection of someone new to our senior class was, it was inappropriate to have Boyd McCullough deliver "Just Around the Corner" which represented the nearest thing to a valedictory address.
So to answer your question succinctly... I don't know... BUT with the Bill Gates Revolution and normal deterioration of record keeping, ATHS may not know either.

Hi Glenn,

I will try to check with the group that is preserving all the stuff about Tech, if I can find a telephone number, and see what's what in this situation.

I, like you, but only after all these years and seeing it in print, was surprised that Boyd was selected. On the other hand, I think he was a bright student and very appreciative of going to Tech. I never really knew him, and can't remember if he and I were in a class together.

For whatever obscure reason, I was asked to mentor Boyd and help him to write and present the graduation address.
It was gut wrenching when he wrote "To my best friend" in my Tech yearbook. I contacted his widow when I learned of his passing, and she said Boyd was gregarious and well liked with many friends in later life... that helped a lot.
