James L. Johnson Jr.* Visit Guest Book
James Lewis "JJ" "Bubby" Johnson, Jr.

died peacefully, at home with his family, on July 14, 2012, of Lou Gehrig's disease.

James was born in Indianapolis, IN on September 20, 1945 to the late Mildred Durham Tucker and the late James L. Johnson, Sr. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1963 and from IUPUI in 1976. He married his caring and loving wife, Carol, in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day in 1996.

Indianapolis was his home for his entire 66 years of life. It is here that he chose to use his key traits: stubbornness, hard work, and compassion to serve and protect both his family and his community. JJ proudly served 37 years on the Indianapolis Police Department and earned his Sergeant's badge in 1983. James Johnson profoundly believed that there were ALWAYS two sides to every story. As a police officer, his incredible ability to listen, acknowledge, and mediate both sides earned him the nickname "the silver tongue."

James also pursued his interest in real estate, working as a realtor at Walt Howard Realty. He purchased his first property at the age of 18 and worked hard managing and rehabbing his numerous rental properties. Sports were a major source of enjoyment for James. He coached youth basketball and baseball, his favorite moments being coaching his 2 sons through their championship games to several titles over the years.

James loved his family, cherished his friends and respected his fellow man.

James is preceded in death by his sister, Berkley Johnson Banks; and brother, Virgil Tucker.

James is survived by wife, Carol Ann Johnson; stepmother, Ethel Johnson; sons, James L. Johnson III (Stephanie) and Mark A. Johnson; daughters, Nicole Rowe (Vequin) and Tracie Ford (Sherrell); sisters, Helen Cornelius, Sharron Davis (Tyree), Estralita Ward, Charlene Puckett, Connie Pettis (Chester), and Leona Drake; brothers, Orvil Tucker, Norvil Tucker, Ronnie Tucker (Linda), Thomas Tucker (Mary), Kevin Tucker, and Aaron Tucker. James is also survived by 16 grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

On July 14, 2012, James as always, saw two sides. And with the same love, care, and dignity he showed in life, he, again, acknowledged both sides… this time he chose heaven. We will all forever cherish the values, the strength, and the dignity that James Johnson showed us throughout his life and now as he rests in peace.

Memorial contributions can be made to IU Hospice, c/o Methodist Health Foundation 1800 N. Capitol Avenue, P.O. Box 7168, Indianapolis, IN 46207-7168.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday, July 20, 2012 at Noon at Crown Hill Funeral Home Remembrance Chapel . Visitation will be two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery
