Tammy,
You are doing the right thing -by your daughter and your granddaughter! Do not let anyone try to make you think differently than what IS! I am actually appalled at this counslers actions and re-actions. It is statistically out there that meth addicts typically need a longer recovery period than 30 days -and ALL addicts have a relapse rate that is beyond what we would think. For a 'professional' to be telling the addict that they should retrieve their child after abandoning them and before they have not only had true recovery, but also proven themselves -and have a long standing of recovery is not only hurtful to the addict but I think downright unresponsible!! You need to really research meth addictions, recovery rates, chances of relapse and ask that therapist if SHE is WILLING to put this child's life on the line b/c of the addict convincing her after a measely 30 days of sobriety!!! If I were you, I would not only write her boss a well thought out, well written, statistical facts and knowledge letter -but the who-ever owns or operates that facility. It is privately owne, publically, church based? It needs to go to the top! Not only is that therapist possibly putting that child in harms way -but giving a vunerable, scared, and historically unable to cope with problems addict false hope that it is THAT easy when she leaves treatment. False hope that could jeapordize her recovery and ability to learn how to take care of herself first and learn healthy coping mechanisms without drugs.
I'm sorry to have gone on and on...but I shocked!! I have my BA in psychology with a minor in addictive disorders. I used to work with drug addicts teaching them life and parenting skills. All of the addicts I worked with wanted their kids back -and were in recovery -but we spend A LOT of time with them teaching them skills so the family was not back to square one that got them into the program in the first place. This took a lot of time -as well as learning to reconnect and build trust in the children that they had lost due to their drug use. There are other people to consider rather than the addicts NEEDS!! Geez -that's what made the addict an addict in the first damn place.
Okay -I'm done venting.....sorry, but just reading your posts got ME fired up!
Please keep us posted on how things are going! Stay strong and pray and know you are doing everything you can to give your daughter and your granddaughter a HEALTHY life!!!
God Bless!!!!!
