In my opinion if it is going unnoticed, it's because people around them are very naive. It is doing damage from the very first hit. They are being enabled by those around them, ie" jobs, family, etc.....
What people don't realize sometimes, including me when I didn't know about my husband, is that if there is always some kind of drama happening on a constant basis. most likely there is drugs or alcohol for that matter. Looking lower class sometimes is because of income, other times - addiction from someone in the family and the rest suffer and I mean the whole family. If it looks like they are holding it together, trust me, it will fall apart sooner or later.
