I have sat here only a few minutes after stumbling onto this site, took a link from another site re: Meth. After reading your story, I want you to know that there you are not alone!
I am a mother of two boys 18 & 19.
Both are Meth addicts and both are in prison for crimes related to drug use and crimes to obtain meth.
One is nearly done with a two year prison sentence at the DYC (youth corrections) while the other has been in in confinement 9 months awaiting sentencing.
My 19 year old has a 15 month old daughter, so I am also a grandmother.
Here is my story in a nut shell (or as close as I can get it) My boys were 14 & 15 when they began abusing drugs other than weed. My youngest was dianosed ADHD and we began suspecting he was abusing the Ritalin and as it turned out both boys were cutting it up and snorting it like cocaine. It's called "sped-med" and is used quite frequently among the highschool/college crowd and easily gotten since a majority of our school aged children are being medicated for ADD/ADHD. From there it escalated to a near overdose on "triple-C" or what we know as the over the counter cold medicine Coricidan Cough & Cold. Then began the meth. Within 2 years my sons' were full blown meth addicts stealing my DVD player, DVD's, a near escape with my lap-top and video gaming equipment began missing. When there was nothing left to take from us, they began committing crimes ranging from forgery to breaking and entering. Devastating me. My younger son was put into an intense outpatient re-hab and relapsed and violated probation on his 8th week of sobriety and was then committed to youth corrections for a period of 1-2 years. All the while my older son is entrenching himself in a local meth ring that was trying to take over our local community drug trade. (Even as I tell my story, it sounds like a "made for TV movie", but if asked, I can produce newspaper articles and local news coverage to prove it.) The nightmare had only just begun. Due to his involvement with this meth ring locally referred to as the "brotherhood" he is facing charges ranging from kidnapping to use of a deadly weapon. He could face life in prison on the kidnapping charge alone, and he turns 20 on April 1, he is still a young, immature man. Even though the outcome is still unkown I have hope.
My younger son is starting his last 30 days of a two year sentence. While in youth corrections, he completed his GED, earned a certificate in Culinary Arts and even earned enough credit hours to obtain a Chef's coat. He comes home May 1st. I still pray everyday for his sobriety.
Some things we did to re-connect as a family AFTER addiction:
Never give up on them!
Family drug counseling - there are alwasy family infulences and problems that can lead to addiciton
Multi-Family counseling - hearing another persons strugles keep you focused that "you are not alone"
Individual counseling - the best $20 I spent each week.
Just know you are not alone. There is hope!
Your friend,
Chelle
