What you are experiencing is called hallucinatory sleep paralysis and it is the most frightening experience that I have ever had. I thought for years that I was crazy, but an ABC news story explained the sleep disorder. It was such a relief to realize that I was not the only person to experience this condition and to learn that it was not harmful. I understand that only about 6% of the population experiences this disorder. It has been experienced globally and is probably the actual cause of belief in vampires, alien abductions, etc. I have had many experiences with it over the years and just knowing what it actually is has been most helpful in dealing with it.
