'Matthew Hopkins' was the Witchfinder General and his reign of terror started near Manningtree, where he examined Elizabeth Clarke, a poor one-legged old woman in the Thorn Inn, Mistley in 1644. By July of the following year, Hopkins had condemned 29 others to die for Witchcraft in what is known as the 'Chelmsford Trials'. Ten of them were hanged in Chelmsford whilst the other nineteen suffered the same fate at Seafield Bay.
Having just moved to Chelmsford myself, I find the history of the place fascinating and indeed it is hard to find a better place for 'Ghost Hunting' than in Essex. If any of you are interested in maybe starting a small group of us that would like to persue this subject, then we may be able to start some sort of group. E-mail me if you are interested.
If you have cable or satelite TV, tune into Living TV over the Easter weekend. The Most Haunted TV programme is live from Canewdon and they will have webcams set up throughout the village each evening. They are on the trial of Matthew Hopkins. Should make for some interesting TV.
As I said, if you would like to form a group contact me, it would great to hear from you.
