I wanted to comment on one aspect of your story. You asked if ghost were the blurs we see out of the corner of our eyes. There is a growing scientific explaination for this type of 'sighting' which is usually couple with a sense of fear or uneasiness. the theory is that it is caused by a naturally occurring phenomena called 'sub-oscillation' or more commonly 'infra-sound' this is a vibration which is below the range of human hearing (most likely around 18.98Hz) which causes the surface of the eye to vibrate imperceptably and causes the same effect as if you gently touch your eye with a finger, which is a dark blur in the corner of your field of vision. Infra-sound is also though to stimulate the section of your brain which produces your 'fear' hormone which can account for the sense of dread which accompanies the images. A forensic scientist, Vic Tandy first investigated this in about 1998 when his modern laboratory in Warwick suddenly seemed to show signs of being haunted, cleaners complained about dark shapes in the corner of the room which disappeared as soon as they looked directly at them and a feeling of uneasiness.
Mr Tandy had taken in his fencing sword to the lab one night to repair it and had it clamped in a vice when he had the same experience. He saw at the same time that the sword appeared to be vibrating and he then traced the source of the oscillation back to a new ceiling fan which was producing that frequency. This was the start of his study and resulted in him conducting a double blind test of the Edinburgh vaults where the rooms which his subjects felt were haunted were producing the infrasound due to their proximity to pipes and services etc.
