Subject: Unusual Happenings - Advice Requested

Hello everybody.

Recently I came home from university to be matter-of-factly told by my parents that they now have a ghost in their room.
On further investigation, the "ghost" is an intense smell of fish which appears and reappears in a matter of moments. The smell is localised in one room and even with the door open will not drift out. It does not contaminate any furniture or clothing, and when it dissapears it leaves no trace. The room has been emptied to look for the source, but none has been found. There doesn't appear to be a centre, rather the smell is diffuse throughout the room. It's speed of appearance is quite frightening. I have walked out of the room, then walked back in a few minutes later to be met with an over-powering smell of fish. I will leave the room and return minutes later and there is no trace of the smell.
I have taken a thermometer into the room, with inconclusive results. There is no noticeable "cold patch" but the thermometer does show localised variations of 1 or 2 degrees.

The phenomenon began a few months back when my parents took a cruise in the Mediterranean. They were staying on a recomissioned cargo-vessel which is now a luxury cruiser. My mother swears she woke one night to see two men standing and having a conversation on the other side of the room. She screamed, they looked at her, and she turned on the light. They had vanished. The door was locked on the inside.
My mother insisted one of the men has "followed" her home.

I admit I am a little sceptical, but I cannot explain the smell. As far as I am aware, such a strong odour should leave a trace on the bed-covers or the curtains, but it does not. And I cannot explain how it is diffuse throughout the room, apparently without a source. Our house is only 30 years old and we have never had any other strange happenings. None of the house's former owners are dead.

I would be grateful if someone could advise me on what to do next? I don't have a lot of money for fancy equipement, but I would like to investigate this further. What should my next steps be? My mother is not worried by her "friendly ghost" but as a scientist I find this too intriguing to simply ignore.
