Strangely I experienced something quite similar a couple of years ago. I found that my bedroom would quite suddenly acquire a strong smell of fish. For a while I suspected the personal hygiene of my girlfriend but upon investigation it turned out to be caused by a bedside lamp. The lampshade was stuck together using a glue that when the lamp was turned on, heated up and produced a fish like smell. My first ‘port of call’ as it were, would be to attempt to rule out something similar in your mothers room.
