That's a good question. being a subscriber to alt.folklore.ghost-stories, I saw someone's sig that said something like, "Since the beginning of time, Man has been taught to fear what he does not understand."
That which lies Beyond has always held a certain "awe and mystery" for us. Death, being the greatest mystery of all, as well as what lies beyond Death has intrigued us and frightened us since time immemorial. As far as bad or evil, I think that's up to the individual and the mindset of same.
I once heard an ignorant person say that what Stephen King writes is evil. I practically jumped down her throat and asked her, "What is worse? To put pen to paper and write a story that entertains people...or to shoot a Police Officer dead while holding up a store?"
