its because of the small minded people usually in the scientific community believe because they cannot touch, feel, or taste something then it goes against thier ego....so they breed contempt in the masses against any given subject which does not comply to thier version of the truth.....so then people start to fear something believing that its bad because they cannot see beyond what they are told
